Bite of the Mango By Mariatu Kamara and Susan McClelland
From 1991 to 2002, Sierra Leone was engaged in a brutal civil war. Armed rebels with the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) destroyed villages and farms, and raped, maimed and murdered thousands of women and children. Bite of the Mango is Mariatu Kamara's memoir, chronicling her experiences as a war child growing up in Sierra Leone.
We were honoured to have Mariatu Kamara visit Loretto College in February 2009 as a representative of UNICEF, to inform students on the challenges facing women and children in the world today by sharing her personal story. This visit was also complemented with a book signing, in which students were able to purchase the book and received a personalized template by Mariatu.
