But not everyone is bad, although the rebels cut off her hands they were just young boys, kidnapped from their villages, and basically brainwashed into harming others. I feel sorry for those boys. They never really had a shot at a good childhood. Instead they are dragged down into a war that they shouldn't have been thrown into. I also cried at the part when the authoress is tortured and raped. I have to admit...i couldn't pick up the book again for a while.

I thought "How could someone do that to another human being?" but then I realized that the child soldiers were doing what they did because they were under a higher control and didn't know any better;there are former child soldiers who have written books and told their sides of the story, but nevertheless what they did was wrong and inexcusable. Anyhow, when Mariatu Kamara came to speak to us about her book I felt as though she was an inspiration to everyone who has gone through a hard life (not as hard as hers), her story has a message that no matter what is done to you, you must continue to live on and live life happily.
